Below is a quick introduction to these medicinal mushrooms, it would be impossible for us to give you a list of all the benefits and studies on these amazing specimens without writing a book!

However, we’ve compiled some of the top attributes of each mushroom below, and encourage you to explore the incredible research out there that has been on these superfoods, or come in to the Light Cellar Superfoods Shop and talk to our knowledgeable staff.

One of our favourite books on the subject which we stock in the store is Edmonton based author Robert Rogers ‘Fungal Pharmacy’.

And if you are inspired and want more mushrooms, not only in your chocolate, but coffee, elixirs and smoothies, we carry all the medicinal mushrooms and mushroom blends in store and online here, so you can easily add them into your daily routine.

White Chocolate Lion’s Mane Matcha Mint

50% Cacao
Feelin: Focused & Refreshed
Flavour: Minty, Sweet & Green Tea

Lion’s Mane medicinal mushroom (Hericium erinaceus) contains hericenones and erinacines, two compounds that stimulate the growth of brain cells. As we age, the brain’s ability to form new connections tends to decline.

This means that Lion’s mane may have the potential to boost mental functions, including memory, alleviating mild symptoms of anxiety and depression, as well as speed up recovery of nervous system injuries.

Research shows that lion’s mane mushrooms contain powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds that may help reduce the impact of many illnesses including heart disease, cancer and autoimmune disorders, as well as stress related symptoms.

Lion’s Mane can also boost fat metabolism and help prevent the oxidation of cholesterol in the bloodstream, which is beneficial for heart health.

Chaga Maple Vanilla

74% Cacao
Feelin: Friendly and Uplifting
Flavour: Maple Sugar Crunch, Malt Vanilla & Black Tea

Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is a medicinal mushroom that grows on birch trees in the northern hemisphere.

Known as the ‘King of Mushrooms’, Chaga stimulates and supports the health of the immune system, helping wounds heal and effectively reducing the severity of allergies. It is also rich in many vitamins and minerals including B-complex vitamins, vitamin D, potassium, iron, zinc, calcium, and magnesium to name a few.

An incredible source of antioxidants, and serious research is being done on the cancer fighting properties of this super mushroom.

Chaga may also help regulate the production of cytokines – proteins that play a vital role in stimulating white blood cells, preparing the immune system to fight off illness. This can also help reduce inflammation in the body, the root of many illnesses such as arthritis and autoimmune disorders.

Reishi Mocha

74% Cacao
Feelin: Relaxed in the Flow
Flavour: Deep, Dark & Robust

Known as the ‘mushroom of immortality’, Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) brings a calming mental clarity.

This medicinal mushroom is known for its many amazing benefits, including the ability to increase energy by reducing stress, symptoms of anxiety and depression, as well as preventing fatigue.

This powerful mushroom is high in antioxidants, which can prevent cell damage. With the ability to increase white blood cell count, Reishi can help fight off illnesses and disease. As surprising as it may seem, this mushroom is a powerful antifungal, with the ability to balance candida overgrowth.

Reishi also supports kidney and cardiovascular health and helps to stabilize and maintain healthy blood sugar levels.

Cordyceps Coconut Ginger

62% Cacao
Feelin: Get Groov’n
Flavour: Zesty & Warming

Cordyceps (Cordyceps militaris) was traditionally used to reduce fatigue and boost strength and sex drive.

Not only is this mushroom full of antioxidants and is believed to have anti-aging properties. Research suggests that Cordyceps may actually have the potential to treat cancer, as well as some side effects of cancer treatments.

This medicinal mushroom can also help balance blood sugar levels, an important factor in type 2 diabetes. It also contains adenosine, which is a naturally occurring compound that has heart-protective effects.

Research has shown that when human cells are exposed to Cordyceps, special proteins that increase inflammation in the body become suppressed. This makes cordyceps an excellent medicinal mushroom to help with asthma and many other inflammatory illnesses.

Fungi Fix 7

74% Cacao
Feelin: Stellar Support
Flavour: Rich Dark Brown & Creamy Umami

Want the benefits of all the mushrooms mentioned above and more?

That’s where the new Fungi Fix 7 comes in. With Light Cellar’s own blend of seven medicinal mushrooms, you will taste simply pure, creamy dark chocolate, while receiving the benefits of these amazing superfoods.

We’ve given you the rundown on the first four medicinal mushrooms in the bars above (Lion’s Mane, Chaga, Reishi, and Cordyceps), so here’s the scoop on the final three medicinal mushrooms in this seven-mushroom bar:

Maitake Mushroom

Maitake” (Grifola frondosa) means ‘dancing mushroom’ in Japanese.

It is said that when it was found in the wild, people would dance with happiness due to the excitement of the great healing properties of this mushroom.

This medicinal mushroom is an adaptogen, meaning it works in the body to regulate systems that have become unbalanced, whether physically or mentally.

Maitake, has shown even better results when compared to other mushrooms, in preventing and treating cancer. It is high in antioxidants, vitamins B & C, minerals, and amino acids. Maitake also helps boost your immune system to keep you in optimal health.

Oyster Mushrooms

Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) have been gaining popularity in North America recently and can often be found at specialty markets.

Don’t be be fooled into thinking this is a simple mushroom!

Containing many B vitamins, including B12, this medicinal mushroom also contains iron, vitamin C, vitamin D, and folic acid.

Oyster mushrooms also have antioxidant properties, as well as the ability to lower cholesterol. These mushrooms also contain antiviral properties; enhancing the immune system and improving its regulation. Oyster mushrooms not only strengthen to protect the body, but also help fight any ongoing illnesses.

Antimicrobial, these mushrooms have the ability to fight drug resistant bacteria and candida overgrowth.

Turkey Tail

Commonly known as Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor), this medicinal mushroom got its name from its striking colours and resemblance to, you guessed it, a turkey tail!

Turkey tail contains an impressive array of antioxidants, many of which have been shown to release immunoprotective proteins, boosting your immune system by reducing inflammation and releasing protective compounds.

Turkey tail also contains prebiotics; a non-digestible fiber that is able to make it through the intestines to feed and nourish the beneficial bacteria in the gut.

This means turkey tail can ease symptoms of poor gut health such as digestive issues, sugar cravings, food allergies, anxiety and depression, skin problems, and more.
